From London to Laos
Passa Paa is a cultural design collective based in Laos. The brain child of Heather Smith, Veomanee Douangdala and Joanna Smith, this Lao based ensemble created a studio space in which to experiment with pattern making techniques and product design. Heather a Brit by origin has been travelling to Laos since 1999, the same year she started at Chelsea Design School. A bachelors and a Master degree later Heather worked in the fast paced London design world yet her heart was back in Laos. A trip to remote Akha, Hmong and Lanten communities had inspired a fascination with Indigo and handstitch. Heather’s own London based work used the environment as a source of pattern making. Jo and Veo, have been co-running Ock Pop Tok Textile design in Laos for 12 years. Veo a weaver by family tradition and Jo a photographer by profession were looking for ways to move textile design in Laos to the next level. Heather approached them with a series of exciting new ideas….Passa Paa studio is in the Ock Pop Tok grounds in Luang Prabang and serves as a creative hub for both local and international designers, artisans and interns.
